The Client

Imagine a child caught in the crossfire of a high-stakes custody battle. Their future hangs in the balance, and the legal system can feel overwhelming. This is where Family Law CASA steps in.

Family Law CASA, a nonprofit organization, was founded to advocate for children in high-risk custody cases within King County family courts. Their mission includes upholding racial equity, with a strong focus on supporting BIPOC families disproportionately impacted by the family court system.

The Challenge

However, Family Law CASA faced a challenge: their website didn’t effectively communicate their critical role nor differentiate it from other organizations with similar services, but different audiences.

They needed a website that clearly reflected their mission, impact, and professionalism, attracting passionate volunteers and generous donors.

The Solution

M Agency joined forces with this nonprofit to create a website that would be a powerful tool for advocacy. Through a collaborative process, we identified key objectives for redesigning their site:

  • Elevating Visibility: Highlighting their distinct services in providing free child advocacy and resources for families and lawyers.
  • Volunteer Recruitment: Attracting a dedicated pool of volunteers to advocate for children in King County.
  • Securing Donations: Ensuring their free services could continue to support low-income families.

User-Centric Approach

Since one of their main goals was to provide relevant information for their various audiences, we knew our approach had to be deeply user-centric. We put together and presented to the client a few strategies that would clearly guide the users to the right sections and offer a seamless browsing experience.

Based on the client’s needs, we went with the following:

  • Intuitive digital guide: To make the user experience more personalized, we implemented a digital guide that allows visitors to select their specific needs, directing them to the most relevant information. This feature ensures that users feel heard and supported as they navigate the site.
  • Custom sitemap: A key priority was to design the sitemap and page construction to focus on the most critical areas: volunteer recruitment and donation. When designing the sitemap and page structure, we focused on creating clear pathways within the hero section, guiding visitors towards key areas for resources, volunteering and donations.
  • Impact reporting: We wanted the homepage to show the organization’s impact clearly, using key statistics and icons that communicate their achievements without highlighting specific individuals.

User Journeys

In crafting the copy and site architecture for Family Law CASA’s website, we began by mapping out user journeys to understand the emotional and practical needs of each audience—from initial interaction to exploring the site and taking action. This approach allowed us to deeply empathize with their users and tailor the messaging with strong calls to action throughout the website.

Ethical Storytelling

In custody cases involving high-risk safety factors such as domestic violence, substance abuse or mental illness, children’s voices often get lost. When Family Law CASA gets involved they deploy trained advocates and a dedicated legal team to ensure every child, especially those in underserved communities, has a chance to be heard.

With this story in mind, we landed on a core messaging theme: Every Child Deserves…

The hero message, “Every Child Deserves to Be Heard,” doesn’t center on the organization itself, but on the fundamental right of a child to have their story acknowledged, especially where their future is concerned. The message is both evocative and action-oriented, subtly hinting at the injustice being addressed and Family Law CASA’s role in rectifying it.

By consistently positioning the child as the hero and the nonprofit as a supportive guide, the messaging connects with users and invites them into the story. The website won’t just provide information; but ignite a sense of purpose, inspiring visitors to become active participants in creating a more equitable future for children local to them— because they deserve nothing less.

User Experience

With the copy, user journey and color scheme ready to go, our UI/UX specialist was ready to put it all together. Our UI/UX specialist began the design process with extensive research and moodboard creation to align with Family Law CASA’s key objectives.

Bite-sized content sections, free of excessive jargon, ensured easy comprehension. Clear and prominent calls to action guided users towards relevant information and action buttons. This focus on simplicity made the website accessible to a diverse audience, ensuring everyone could find the support they needed.

Visual Storytelling

Several key elements contributed to the website’s visual appeal. Orange buttons ensured easy identification of calls to action. Layered sections created the impression of a continuous narrative, guiding users through FLC’s story. Most importantly, the chosen font perfectly complemented the overall aesthetic – professional, welcoming, and easy to read.

This emphasis on user experience, coupled with a focus on brand storytelling, laid the foundation for a website that would not only inform but inspire action.

Website Development

The development phase focused on integrating key functionalities. This included a discreet “quick exit” pop-up for users needing to leave the site unnoticed (as seen above), password-protected content for specific pages, and seamless integration of their donation widget across various website sections. Additionally, a priority was placed on making resources easily accessible for both those seeking help and CASA advocates.

Content Management

The new site was built using WordPress, making it easy for Family Law CASA’s team to update content without needing technical assistance. We also ensured there was room for growth, so the site could evolve as the organization’s needs change.

SEO Optimization

To increase their visibility online, we implemented SEO best practices. This included writing new meta titles and descriptions, using modern image formats, setting lazy-loading for offscreen images, and reducing render-blocking scripts. These enhancements ensured a smooth user experience, which is crucial for keeping visitors engaged.

Our goal was to improve their search engine rankings and drive more organic traffic to the site.
